Appliances for freezing biological materials with liquid nitrogen consist of a freezing chamber, mechanical, electrical and electronic devices for performing and monitoring the freezing process, and also a supply duct through which liquid nitrogen can be fed from an insulated nitrogen container. The freezing chamber and hence the whole appliance is tailored to a given size of biological material. In order that such an appliance may be used for different sizes and quantities of the biological material, the mechanical, electrical and electronic devices are accommodated in three separate components (1,3,10) which can be combined in different spatial arrangements. Appliances for the most diverse freezing tasks can thus be assembled, if necessary exchanging the component (10) containing the electronic and cryogenic operating unit. In a preferred embodiment, the nitrogen container is integrated by means of a double-walled tube (9) into the component (10) which contains the electronic and cryogenic operating unit. <IMAGE>
