To obtain loose stitch groups in a stable single-face basic knitted fabric, the flat knitting machine is equipped with at least one set of narrowing fingers (15) which can be arranged respectively in front of the edge (14) of stop webs (13) of the knockover comb. The narrowing fingers (15) can appropriately be formed on a lowerable narrowing comb (17) which is arranged adjustably on a yarn-guide rail (20) and which can be switched from the carriage. <IMAGE>
