In the welding of the side panels to the floor and roof panels of motor vehicle bodywork, the separate parts forming each side panel are clamped in supports (4) mounted on opposite sides of the welding machine. The supports swing the assembled side panels towards the already positioned floor and roof panels. As the side panels are brought into position the clamps holding them to the supports are released and at the same time the clamps which clamp them to the roof and side panels are engaged so that they are held in the correct position for welding.
