The method according to the invention permits a quick, precise setting and printing of a selected type character located on the circumference of a type wheel driven by a step motor. By supplying the stator winding of the step motor with current with a constantly repeating sequence of current patterns, the rotor of the motor or the type wheel is rotated from an actual angular position into a desired angular position and when said position is reached the voltage at the stator windings is reduced from a first higher voltage to a second lower voltage. By briefly feeding the motor windings with a higher voltage, a precise positioning of the type wheel is ensured without an appreciable rise in the thermal loading of the motor.
