The winder has two parallel drums(80,81), which support a wound drum(87). A rider roller(85) lies on top of the drum and its movement is used to control the drive to a spindle, which acts to separate the drums as the size of the wound drum increases. One of the support drums may rotate on a fixed axis with the other drum only being moved. Three support drums(80,81,83) may be provided with two mounted side-by-side so that the drums may be wound first between one of the adjacent pairs and the other roller, and then between the second of the pairs and the other roller, etc.
