PURPOSE:To maintain good combustion and to improve accelerating performance and maneuverability at the time of switching from ''partial-cylinder'' operation to ''entire-cylinder'' operation in an engine, in which the number of cylinders in operation is controlled according to the load, by temporarily increasing by a certain amount the feeding rate of the fuel to the cylinders which have been reposed. CONSTITUTION:According to operation state signals from various sensors of an engine equipped with operating side cylinders A-C and reposing side cylinders D-F, a control unit 10 regulates the injection rate from fuel injection valve a to f. During the partial-cylinder operation, fresh air is supplied to the reposing side cylinders via a bypass passage 12 in order to reduce a pumping loss. As a result, the reposing side cylinders cool down gradually. At the time of switching from the ''partial-cylinder'' operation to the ''entire-cylinder'' operation, the control unit 10 increases temporaily the injection rate of the reposing side cylinders D-F to produce thick fuel-air mixture, thereby improving ignitionability in order to accelerate combustion as well as to improve acceleration response and maneuverability. |
