PURPOSE:To improve a magnetic recording medium in bond strength, mechanical strength and shelf stability under a high temperature and a high humidity, by a method wherein a thin film with a predetermined composition is provided by introducing 0 into a Co-P or Co-Ni-P magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:A sputtering is effected by employing a target containing Co, P, O or Co, Ni, P, O in an atmosphere with an O2 partial pressure of 1X10<-5>- 4X10<-2>Torr to deposit a magnetic recording medium represented by the formula, X100-x-yPxOy, on a substrate having a primary coat of Ti or a Ti alloy. In the formula: X represents Co or Co and Ni; (x) and (y) are set to be 1<x<8 and 0.2<y<8 by wt%, respectively; and the weight ratio between Ni and (Co+ Ni) is selected to be 0 or not exceeding 0.35. After being deposited, the magnetic recording medium is oxidized. This constitution permits the magnetic recording medium to be firmly bonded onto a substrate of polyester film or the like. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain a thin film magnetic layer sufficiently high in mechanical strength and excellent in shelf stability under a high temperature and a high humidity. |
