An ice-resistant ocean structure comprising in combination a. vertical support means having one or more vertical members, b. one or more screw means rotatably mounted on one or more of said members, wherein the axis of said member and said screw means are congruent or parallel, c. means for rotating said screw means, d. helical blade means on said screw means so adapted and constructed as to move ice abutting said member to fail said ice in flexure. In its most generic aspect the invention herein can be viewed as comprising structures having improved ice-contacting means for heavy ice which is covering navigable water. These structures act upon the ice, causing the ice to fail in flexure. Processes based on such means are also within this generic concept. The preferred ice-contacting means is a screw means having a relatively large length-to-diameter ratio. However, for some embodiments of the invention, other types of ice-contacting means are satisfactory. In another aspect, the invention provides a method of protecting an ocean structure having a vertical support member from the force of ice floes which comprises providing such member in contact with said ice floes with a vertically mounted screw means having a. a helical blade means, b. rotating said means wherein said blade engages said ice floes in either a lifting or depressing mode thereby causing said floe to fail in flexure.
|
