PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound, economically, by carrying out the electrolytic reduction of an acrylic acid ester with a carbonyl compound on a specific cathode, and reacting the resultant gamma-lactone compound in a water- insoluble inert solvent in the presence of a sulfonic acid catalyst under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of an acrylic acid ester and a compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or alkyl) is subjected to the electrolytic reduction on a cathode made of lead or an alloy containing lead as a main component. The resultant compound of formula II is made to react in a water-insoluble inert solvent in the presence of a sulfonic acid catalyst under heating while removing the water produced by the reaction from the system. The compound of formula IIIwhich is useful as a raw material of perfumes, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc. and useful also as a perfume, can be prepared by this process in extremely high yield. The reaction of the process can be carried out under relatively mild condition, and the catalyst can be recovered and reused extremely easily. |
