The invention proposes a device for starting and stopping an internal combustion engine provided with a starter motor in a vehicle, the said device being designed as a microcomputer (10) and containing a multiplicity of different starting and stopping functions for the internal combustion engine. This microcomputer (10) has at least one input (15, 16), it being possible for particular stopping and starting functions to be selected and set as a function of permanently applied signals. In this way, it is possible for the starting and stopping device to be set subsequently to desired starting and stopping functions and it is therefore universal in application. <IMAGE>
