The invention relates to a method for operating an X-ray source with a rotating anode X-ray tube whose anode is cooled by liquid metal. In this case, the metal is inserted into the hollow anode body and is intended to solidify without any unbalance on completion of the generation of the rays, that is to say on cooling. To this end, the invention provides that the anode is kept moving after generating X-rays at least until its temperature has fallen below the melting temperature of the coolant. Rotating-anode X-ray tubes of this type are especially suitable for use in medical X-ray diagnostics.
