A pneumatically driven clamping device has a clamping part (2) which is movable in the clamping direction in a housing (1), and an adjusting means (3-5) for coarse adjustment of the clamping part (2) relative to the housing (1) in the clamping direction. Provided between the adjusting means (3-5) and the clamping part (2), in a drive housing (6), is a power assist (7-9) having a primary member (10, 11) capable of being pneumatically pressurised, an abutment (8) provided at its one end and connected to the adjusting means (3-5), and a secondary member (9) movable at its other end in the clamping direction and acting on the clamping part (2). A wedge (14), which is movable transversely with respect to the clamping direction of the power assist (7-9) and can be inserted between its secondary member (9) and the adjoining part (6), is provided in the drive housing (6). For the drive, a first piston which acts on the wedge (14) with a wedge face (19) is provided, said piston being connected to a double-acting second piston. The pressure spaces (18a, 30a) of the associated cylinders are connected via a parallel duct and are connected to the pressure space (10a) of the primary-member drive (10, 11) via a connecting duct (21) and an adjustable overpressure valve (22) arranged in the latter. <IMAGE>
