In the drying section of a paper machine, the paper web (10) to be dried runs, together with an endless air-permeable supporting band (17), over drying cylinders (11 to 15) in a meander-like manner. An air-guide box (20) is provided on the side of the supporting band in the running path from an upper cylinder (11) to a lower cylinder (12). Between a side wall of this box (plate 21) and the supporting band (17) remains a narrow air gap, in which the supporting band generates an air flow. Furthermore, air breakaway strips (22 and 23) are provided on the box (20). To avoid the need to suck off air from the entry gusset (9) on the lower cylinder (12), the following is provided: the box (20) has, in the region of the entry gusset (9), large-area air-inlet orifices (25) which are in unthrottled communication with the air gap at the plate (21). Moreover, large-area air-outlet orifices (26) are provided in the upper region of the box (20). <IMAGE>
