Stable aq. solns. of glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (I) are made contg. the monohydrate of (I) in a concn. of 90% to the saturation conc., and when the soln. is diluted with water to a conc. of 25% (I), it exhibits a pH of 12.5. Solns. contg. the monohydrate of (I) are stable and do not undergo the rapid hydrolysis and loss of (I) encountered with previous aq. stock solns. of (I). (I) is a useful raw material in the starch industry and as a starting material in the prepn. of cationic surfactants.
