The invention relates to a method and a device for recovering heat from waste service water, the waste water being led through a container in which a heat exchanger which accommodates water that is to be heated is situated. The object consists in configuring the method in such a way that a large proportion of the heat of the waste service water can be recovered in conjunction with low capital costs. This object is achieved when the waste service water introduced horizontally into the container is separated in accordance with the varying density (cold water/warm water), and essentially only the specifically less dense warm-water component of the waste service water is used for heat exchange.
