To locate objects on the bottom of waters, or for detecting their contour, a sound transducer kept stationary close to the ground scans the environment in the circumferential direction step by step and in each azimuth position in the vertical direction from bottom to top or conversely. The accumulation of echo signals from a certain range of distances is interpreted as an indication that the required object is located there.
