The method for separating coarse and fibrous material from contaminated water is characterised in that it can be incorporated in a trouble-free manner into a water course and the water is reliably freed from the said harmful materials. The retained coarse and fibrous materials are freed of faecal matter owing to the special nature of the washing process. The coarse and fibrous materials purified in this way are fed by the flow to the discharge coil, in which they are then conveyed upwards and dewatered. The dewatering is carried out in such a way that the press water can be fed directly to the water course flowing off. The material pressed and conveyed upwards in this way is then brought into a transport pipe, from where it is supplied to a suitable storage site or a suitable tank.
