The indicator consists of a star-shaped rotor (1) and a stationary sleeve (2). The rotor has a number of radial vanes (4) on a horizontal shaft (3). One rotor vane (8) is painted a different colour from the others so that the direction of rotation can be observed. The stator (2) is a transparent sleeve which is partially open on the windward side and completely open on the leeward side. The indicator is mounted in the bow of the ship, with the shaft at the optimum apparent wind angle, e.g. 30 degrees off the ship's heading, at which the wind should be for greatest efficiency when sailing into the wind. If the stator is stationary, the ship's heading is correct; if the rotor is turning, the ship should be moved into the wind or backed off, depending on the direction of rotation of the rotor.
|
