The invention relates to a method for safely storing dangerous material which endangers people and/or the environment, in particular radioactive waste, poisonous substances and chemical waste or pharmaceutical waste which damage people and/or the environment, dangerous material with a composition which is in each case identical or of the same type being filled into standardised containers which are provided with permanent labelling showing the hazardous nature of the material and the filled containers are placed in protective sheaths whose internal space is larger than the container and the remaining intermediate space is provided with a filling which increases safety during handling and/or storage and subsequently the containers enclosed in the aforesaid manner are combined in groups with dangerous material of composition which is identical or of the same type and are stored underwater or in underground galleries.
