Ethylenically unsaturated compounds are provided having structure (I) wherein R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 is a divalent linking group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms such as alkylene groups, and R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and when R3 is hydrogen and R2 has two carbon atoms, R2 is methyl methylene. The compounds and other amide functional monomers may be used as monomers and reacted with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers via addition polymerization to form useful polymers having a plurality of groups having structure (II), wherein R1 and R3 are as described above for structure (I) and R'2 is a divalent linking group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms, and where R3 is hydrogen and R'2 has two carbon atoms, R'2 is methyl methylene.
