A process for the preparation of a beta -lactam having the partial structure (I): <CHEM> which process comprises reacting a beta -lactam having the partial structure (II): <CHEM> with an oxygenase enzyme. The beta -lactam having partial structure (II) may be isolated or converted to the corresponding beta -lactam having a methoxy group by treatment with a methylating agent such as, for example, a methyl transferase enzyme.
