PURPOSE:To easily obtain an electrochromic display element having stable performance, by using a specified chalcogen compound as the material of a counter electrode. CONSTITUTION:A chalcogen compound of a IVb group element in the periodic table represented by a formula MX2 (where M is at least one among Ti, Zr and Hf, and X is at least one among S, Se and Te) or a chalcogen compound of a Vb group element represented by a formula NX2 (where N is at least one among V, Nb and Ta, and X is at least one among S, Se and Te) is used as the material of a counter electrode so as to obtain stable potential and sufficient current. Each of the chalcogen compounds has a lamellar crystal structure capable of holding cations between the layers, and it has stability to an electrolytic soln. M1+xX2 or N1+xX2 (0<=x<1) having the same crystal structure as MX2 and NX2 may be used. |
