<p>PURPOSE:To reduce electric power required in combustion to a large extent, by forming a heating means for burning fine particles to the contact surface with the filter member of a honeycomb structure made of ceramics as a heat generating body to enhance the combustion efficiency of fine particles. CONSTITUTION:A filter member 42 comprises a porous body made of electric insulating cordierite ceramics and has fine commuicated air passing pores therein. On the other hand, the base material of an electric heater 43 contacted with the filter member 42 comprises a cylindrical honeycomb structure made of cordierite ceramics and has plural grid like air passing orifices 43b pierced therethrough. When an exhaust gas containing fine particles is passed through the electric heater 3 and the filter member 42, said fine particles are collected. With the advance of collection, the air passing resistance of the filter member 42 is gradually raised and the pressure difference before and after the filter member 42 is increased. When this pressure difference reaches a predetermined value, a current is passed through the electric heater 43 by a control apparatus and the collected fine particles are heated and burnt.</p> |
