An apparatus for excavating shafts, in particular trenches, has a chassis (1) which is provided with wheels (6, 7) arranged merely in the travel direction, one behind the other, roughly parallel to the longitudinal direction of the chassis (1). Furthermore, the chassis (1) is provided with extendable supporting arms (16) for supporting on the ground in the working position of the apparatus. Mounted on the chassis (1) is a swivel arm (5, 6) to which either a grab (17) or the bearing arrangement (12) for a supporting wheel (11) can be interchangeably fastened. <IMAGE>
