摘要 A process for applying an at least 30 mu m thick, hard surface layer to objects of titanium or titanium alloys is provided. By means of this surface layer, the wear resistance of the metal and the oxidation resistance are improved. The surface layer is produced by a thermal reaction of the titanium object with a thin foil of, for example, nickel, iron, chromium, silicon and boron, at about 1000 DEG C. In an approximately 70 mu m thick surface layer, Vickers hardnesses of HV 0.05 between 900 and 1170 are achieved.
