An adaptive controller is presented, in particular for a mathematically non-describable system. The state of the system at time t is described by a quality function Q (x, t). The latter depends on n control parameters x = (x1, ... xn)<T>. The proposed adaptive controller proves itself in particular for mathematically non-describable systems, such as occur in missile stabilisation and the altitude control of air-borne and space missiles and other complex systems. In order to optimise such multi parameter, stochastically disturbed systems, it is provided that the controller (10) is applied as a search algorithm which imitates the biological method of mutation and selection. <IMAGE>
