In a drive accumulator (1), the charging-up should be greater by a certain factor than the preceding discharge. An indication of the state of discharge and the control of the charging-up can be carried out simply and with great accuracy if the discharge current of the accumulator is added together and thus a discharge sum is formed, if the charging current flowing into the accumulator in charging mode is added together and if the charging is switched off after the charging current sum has reached a value which is higher by a predetermined factor than the discharge sum determined. <IMAGE>
