In a process for electrolytic etching of aluminium foils for electrolyte capacitors, the foils are treated in etching solutions with chloride ions. The solvent mixture used for the etching electrolyte is a mixture of ethylene glycol and water. This gives etched aluminium foils which have a higher specific capacitance (CA) and a higher mechanical stability, expressed by the bending change number (BW). <IMAGE>
