A device for the taping of cables or the like with material in the form of tape has a spinning plate (1) which rotates around the respective cable and supports guide rollers (8) for the material in the form of tape. Said material is supported in the form of a roll (6) on a sleeve (5) which can rotate with respect to the spinning plate, and is passed via the guide rollers to the material which is to be taped. The roll is caused to rotate by the tension which is exerted on the material in the form of tape by the rotating spinning plate. The tension in this material is produced by a disc brake (10) which is located between the spinning plate and the sleeve. In order that this tension remains constant even when the roll diameter is changing, the disc brake is automatically adjustable. This is done by determining the respective tension in the material in the form of tape via the deflection of one of the guide rollers, which is supported in a moving manner under spring tension. In the event of a deviation from the predetermined tension, a bush (12) which acts on the disc brake is displaced axially by a motor (20), in the sense of achieving the desired braking moment. <IMAGE>
