A method for controlling operating ranges of an internal combustion engine with applied ignition, and a device for performing the method are proposed, in which the fuel mixture provided by a mixture forming device is reduced in quantity by a controlled addition of exhaust gas, so that various technical functions of the engine are fulfilled, for example idling speed control, overrun cut-off, reduction of throttle values etc.
