A pickling hook (1), with which packets of wire or tape can be immersed in aggressive pickling baths of a pickling plant, is surrounded with a leaktight shell (2) made of highly acid-resistant material. This prevents the pickling fluid from reaching the pickling hook (1). The space (5) between the pickling hooks (1) and the shell (2) is filled with a medium and connected to a pressure control device (11). When the shell (2) becomes leaky and the risk of pickling fluid leaking out to the pickling hooks (1) therefore arises, this will be indicated by the control device (11).
