In a process for forming a setting course from green clay bricks, which consists of longitudinal rows and a stretcher-before-header row, the green clay bricks are fed in longitudinal rows and grouped with distances between the green bricks, which are then transported further to a collecting point and assembled together with a stretcher-before-header row to form a setting course. A grouped longitudinal row for assembling the setting course is transported to the collecting point, after which the required green bricks are separated out from a further grouped longitudinal row in order to form the stretcher-before-header row and transported towards the collecting point, the other green bricks in the longitudinal row remaining in the grouping position. The separated-out green bricks are then each individually turned through 90 DEG on the way to the collecting point and assembled into a stretcher-before-header row and assigned to the longitudinal row already in the collecting point. In the meantime the longitudinal row reduced by the separated-out green bricks is filled up with green bricks in the required number corresponding to the number of green bricks separated out, regrouped and fed to the collecting point to complete the setting course. A setting course comprising longitudinal rows and a stretcher-before-header row is thus produced, which is gripped by a setting gripper and transported to a kiln wagon and deposited there.
