A device for mounting e.g. a bearing on a shaft incorporates a tapering adapter sleeve (1) having one or more conical portions cooperating with corresponding portions in the bore of a bearing inner race ring (2). The axial driving up force required for effecting the clamping connection is achieved by tightening a nut (4) or screws arranged in axial threaded bores on a loose flanged ring (3) on the sleeve (1). In order to prevent unintended squeezing of the sleeve the flanged ring (3) has an axially limited mobility in both directions along the sleeve at a distance from the bearing race ring (2), whereby the bearing race ring is not contacted if the sleeve is displaced manually along a shaft by an operator pushing against the flanged ring (3) or the nut (4).
