In a device for cleaning and classifying cereals, seeds or the like in which a main fraction is divided into two substreams, a first substream, which essentially contains only useful material and a second substream which, in addition to useful material, also contains weaker material, both substreams are subjected to Schrollen sifting and then cleaning in different classification and cleaning sieves. In this process, the Schrollen sieves are arranged one on top of the other and partially overlapping one another. A further fraction is fed into an expansion space; the useful material contained in this fraction then drops out of the expansion space onto a third Schrollen sieve to which a further classification sieve is assigned. This third Schrollen sieve and the associated classification sieve located below it are also arranged, at least partially overlapping one another, above the first and second Schrollen sieve. In this way, performance is improved without the basic outline of the machine having to be increased substantially, only a somewhat greater constructional height having to be accepted, space for which is however, in any case frequently available at the respective installation site.
