The invention relates to a process and device for the finish-machining of hardened gearwheels by means of a cutting, shaping tool rolling in the toothing to be machined. To be precise, the electrical discharge method known per se is used between shaping tool and gearwheel. The shaping tool may be a cylindrical or an enveloping worm, it may be a counter-gearwheel, corresponding to the shape of the gearwheel to be machined, or else it may be a toothed rack. The invention makes it possible not only to finish-machine, even in a hard state, such gearwheels which previously could not have been finish-ground, or only with unacceptably great expenditure, but also, by virtue of the electrical discharge method, to produce great accuracies and, in particular, surfaces which are diffuse in their microstructure, which are particularly advantageous with regard to their emergency-running characteristics and with regard to the premature development of a hydrodynamic lubricating film between the tooth flanks. Thus, gearwheels finish-machined in such a way can be expected to provide not only higher finishing accuracy, but also greater efficiency, lesser wear and greater pitting tolerance.
