PURPOSE:To improve the environment during battery assembly by preventing the scattering of the active material powder of a cadmium electrode almost completely by treating the surface of the cadmium electrode with an aqueous alkali solution so as to form a thin cadmium-hydroxide layer over the surface of the cadmium electrode. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a cadmium electrode may be treated by any method as far as an aqueous alkali solution can be homogeneously applied to the surface of the electrode, such as application with a brush, a roller or by spraying. Cadmium oxide used as an active material for a pasted negative electrode, is easily converted into a hydroxide by an alkali. When the negative electrode is treated with a small volume of an aqueous alkali solution, due to the high reactivity between cadmium oxide and an alkali, almost all the alkali solution is absorbed by the surface layer of the plate, and the alkali solution doesn't permeate into the innermost part of the plate. In addition, during the reaction, part of the particles become almost dissolved, adjacent particles are bound together by dissolving, and consequently, the surface of the plate is coated with an extremely thin layer of cadmium hydroxide. |
