The subject of the invention is a method for automatically determining the point of contact between a clutch disc, driven by means of the engine, and an essentially unloaded output-side clutch disc, of which the drive-side and/or the output-side clutch disc can be axially displaced by an actuating drive acting on the contact pressure elements of the respective clutch disc. The actuating drive is at the same time controlled in such a way that initially the clutch discs are brought so far together that the drive-side clutch disc sets the output-side clutch disc rotating in order to eliminate static friction influences. The clutch is then opened and the rotational speed of the output-side clutch disc is brought to or held at a value which differs from the rotational speed of the output-side clutch disc so that on subsequent closing of the clutch the rotational speed or the tendency of the speed of the output-side clutch disc experiences a measurable change. The position which the contact pressure elements adopt at the commencement of the change in the speed or the tendency of the speed of the output-side clutch disc is stored as point of contact and used as point of contact for the further opening and closing sequences of the clutch.
