Laying machine for laying out flat material in layers on a table by means of a laying carriage which is movable to and fro along the latter and which has a material-web conveying device, driveable according to its travelling speed, for the material web to be drawn off from a material stock and to be laid out and, on a material-web guide unit raisable relative to the table surface according to the height of a laid-out material-layer stack, a cutting-off device movable to and fro transversely to the longitudinal direction of the table and for separating a laid-out material layer from the material web to be laid out. To prevent acceleration forces and the relative wind occurring during the approach of the laying carriage from shifting the end of the material layer to be laid out, a laying machine of this type is designed so that the guide unit has an approximately vertically oriented material-web outlet and a material-web conveying device, and that the latter and the cutting-off device are arranged at a short distance behind one another in the running direction of the material web and close in front of the material-web outlet.
