Water-filled hollow steel columns (3) of a supporting construction for high structures each have an internal downpipe (7) and an external hollow column profile (6). Each hollow steel column (3) is designed at its upper end (6') as a water storage tank (16). The water storage tanks (16) of a plurality of hollow steel columns (3) are connected by water-compensating conduits (17) which lead into the water storage tank (16), in each case above the upper end of the downpipe (7). The supply of water lying above the mouths of the water-compensating conduits (17) is available to all connected hollow steel columns (3). In the event of a leak of one column, the supply of water lying below the mouth of the water-compensating conduit (17) is maintained for all other hollow steel columns (3). A separator component ensures clear separation between rising channel and falling channel. <IMAGE>
