A newa antibacterial and coccidiostatic antibiotic (31,559 RP), and its metal salts and salts with nitrogen bases, are obtained by culturing and new strain Streptomyces hygroscopicus DS 24,367 (NRRL 5787) in a suitable medium under aerobic conditions and isolating the 31,559 RP, opt. in salts form. 31,559 RP can be used (i) to treat bacterial infections, esp. due to Gram positive bacteria (e.g. MIC=0.2-2.5 mu g/ml against Staph. aureus, Sarcina lutea, Strept. faecalis, Strept. pyogenes, Dipl. pneumoniae, B. subtilis and B. cereus); (ii) to treat coccidiosis in poultry due to Eimeria. tenella and E. acervulina, (iii) as a feed additive to promote the growth of ruminants and control swine dysentery, and (iv) to treat malaria (active against exptl. Plasmodium infections in chickens and mice). The LD50 of the Na salt is 150 mg/kg (p.o., chicken). |
