The device comprises a tube (1) closed by a ball (2) which can move freely in the tube. The tube comprises two gas inlets (3 and 4) between which the ball (2) can move. On a generatrix of the tube, the wall of the latter is provided with a series of orifices (5) and all these orifices are connected to a common outlet (6). The wall of the conduit comprises an additional orifice (7) connected by a gas conduit (8) to a flow-rate sensor (9) which actuates an alarm (11). Application to the detection of the approach to a critical value of the ratio of the flow rates of gases forming a respirable mixture. <IMAGE>
