. In a method of producing steel from solid ferrous material in a converter, the ferrous materials is preheated by the introduction into the converter of oxygen and fuel through at least two nozzles arranged in the converter side walls at relatively different heights in the region of the converter occupied by the subsequently produced steel melt. During the preheating phase of the solid ferrous materials the nozzles operate as oil-and/orgas/oxygen burners, but when the melt has risen to the level of the lower nozzle(s), the latter is switched to the introduction of powdered carbonaceous fuel and oxygen. Thereafter, when the melt has risen to the level of the upper nozzle(s), oxygen and, at least for some of the time, carbonaceous fuel are introduced into the melt through each of said at least two nozzles.
|
