PURPOSE:To allow a character reader which generates a code for expressing a character to perform flexible character reading operation by applying dynamic programming to the matching between an input character pattern different in code sequence and a reference character pattern. CONSTITUTION:Contour lines 9-19 are detected in the character pattern stored in a pattern observing storage device 1, the features of segments of the counter lines 9-19 are classified and a code sequence encoded and arranged in appearance order is stored in a code sequence detector 3. The center position of each segment of the code sequence is detected, and the code sequence of each reference character pattern of a recognition dictionary 5 is and the code sequence of the input character pattern are compared with each other to find their difference; and a reference pattern having minimum similarlity is regarded as the character name of the input character pattern 7. |
