The invention relates to a vertical belt accumulator that acts as a bridge between interruptions in the belt (2) run in continuous belt systems such as pipe welding installations or the like, comprising channels in which the substantially incoming and outgoing strip (2) is turned around rollers that are arranged on the ingoing and outgoing sides and is alternately guided in vertical loops around deflection rollers that are arranged on upper and lower horizontal roller bridges. The vertical distance between the deflection rollers (4, 5) and thereby the length of the belt that accumulates in the loops can be modified by the perpendicular displacement of said roller bridges (3, 4). The invention is characterized in that the belt (2) can be returned to the incoming side once it has traveled through the accumulator behind the outgoing side (7) by means of guide rollers (6) and can be conveyed at least once more through said belt accumulator in an offset position, close to the belt (2) running on the same plane.
