Process for production of steel in a basic converter, using liquid converter slag

In the process for the production of steel in a basic converter, a portion of the liquid converter slag is used to increase the slag basicity and as a basis for rapid dissolution of the additions to reach saturation. An improvement in the durability of the converter lining is thereby achieved. To achieve saturation of the slag over the whole refining process, the herefor necessary additions to the liquid converter slag used must be added before blowing or at the beginning of blowing. In connection with the use of liquid converter slag and by charging the scrap and the main quantity of lime only after approximately 20-30% of the blowing time, an intermediate withdrawal is possible of the initial slag, which is rich in silicic acid and poor in ferrous oxide. The quantity of slag required for finish refining can thereby be reduced, which furthermore leads to a reduced quantity of lime, an increased use of scrap, and an improvement of the yield of crude steel.
