The invention relates to a process for extracting elemental phosphorus from phosphorus sludge formed in a phosphorus furnace by treating the sludge in a centrifugal separator and removing a fraction of fine dust sludge from a heavy fraction obtained, which contains most of the phosphorus, treating the sludge fraction in hydrocyclones having a diameter of not more than 25.4 mm, in order to separate two streams, a first stream low in phosphorus, which contains particles which are smaller than 8 to 15 mu m, and a second stream high in phosphorus, which contains particles which are greater than 8 to 15 mu m, recycling of the second stream high in phosphorus into the centrifugal separator for extracting phosphorus, and rejection of the first stream low in phosphorus.
