The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyphenols, in which optionally substituted phenols of the general formula Ph are reacted with polyketones of the general formula [Xm(CO)n]y (I) where X is a (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic radical and m, n and y are integers between 3 and 30,000, and the ratio between m and n is between 30,000:2 and 3,000:100, in the presence of acidic catalysts to give the polyphenols of the general formula: <IMAGE> The optionally substituted phenol used is expediently unsubstituted phenol, p-nitrophenol, p-aminophenol, p-chlorophenol, p-sulphophenol, o-chlorophenol, o-bromophenol, o-methylphenol, O,O-dimethylphenol, o-nitrophenol or o-sulphophenol. X in the polyketone (I) is expediently -CH2-CH2-, -CH=CH-, phenylene or the <IMAGE>group, where Z is -O-, -CH2-, -S-, -SO2- or -SO-, m, n and y are expediently integers between 5 and 1,500, the ratio between m and n should be between 15,000:3 and 5,000:50, and y is between 5 and 2,500. At least 2 mole equivalents of the phenol Ph are employed per CO group of the compound (I).
