The output value of a load is varied by controlling the time relationship during a random time interval during which the output is being supplied, and thus controlling the mean output value of the load. The zero crossovers (30') of an AC supply oscillation (11a) are determined in order to trigger an interval timer (28) which generates pulses which are applied to an on/off input of the load; the duration of each "on" time interval can be adjusted in order to control the portion of the random time interval during which the load is in the "on" state. <IMAGE>
