Method for prestressing the prestressing steel members of long tendons using a prestressing apparatus comprising a hollow-piston prestressing jack having an outer cylinder shell and an inner cylinder shell, a jack seat, an anchor plate arranged on the structure and a prestressing plate mounted on the hollow-piston prestressing jack. After a first extension of the hollow piston, the inner cylinder shell of the hollow-piston prestressing jack is supported on the anchor plate with the aid of a lengthening member and the hollow piston is retracted again. Subsequently, an intermediate ring is arranged between press seat and hollow piston, this ring raising the press seat. The hollow piston is then extended again. During the first extension, during the retraction and during the second extension of the hollow piston, the prestressing steel members remain wedged in the prestressing plate. The wedging of the prestressing steel members in the anchor plate is effected only after this. A time-consuming intermediate wedging is unnecessary even with extremely long drawing-out paths for the prestressing steel members. <IMAGE>
