In a steering system for vehicles, a gear power take-off of a steering gear is connected via in each case one connecting rod to the steering track levers of the two steerable wheels of a vehicle axle in such a way that the track differential angles occurring for the locking angles of a steering track lever approaching the maximum value have values greater than zero. In order to reduce the turning circle, at least one connecting rod has a transmission drive for changing its effective length and the transmission drive has a normal transmission step for the track differential angle when greater than zero. When the maximum value of the inner locking angle of the steering track lever of its connecting rod is reached, the transmission drive can be moved into a higher transmission step for a track differential angle which is at least approximately equal to zero.
